Gross National Happiness (GNH)

Say Wha??

That's right, deemed more important than Gross National Product, the country of Bhutan's philosophy is Gross National Happiness with value placed on cultural heritage, health, education, good governance, and individual well-being.

The Eid holiday in Bangladesh means five days off (seven with the weekend) so I'm off to Bhutan tomorrow. According to Lonely Planet:

Bhutan, the Land of the Thunder Dragon, is no ordinary place. It is a Himalayan kingdom replete with myths and legends, where the best of traditional culture thrives and the latest global developments are enthusiastically embraced.

Any foreigner traveling to Bhutan is required to pay a $250 per day tariff BUT this includes 3 meals per day, accommodations, a car tour guide, and the flight from Dhaka to Bhutan.  Sangay, my tour organizer just let me know my flight and visa are in hand and Bhutan is waiting for me.  Thanks, Sangay.

Stay tuned for photos from the happiest place on Earth!
